As the clock ticks closer to 9pm, the anticipation and excitement builds as fans start chanting ‘Mi-ya-vi, Mi-ya-vi’ until it’s finally showtime! It’s been 18 months since Miyavi last graced the UK and even with the jetlag, Miyavi & Bobo kick off the European leg of their ‘We Are The Others’ tour as they mean to go on; no holding back and a force to be reckoned with!
As an album, ‘The Others’ features a vast collection of catchy tunes that also displays Miyavi’s mind-bending skills on guitar. In some ways the album can sound a little compressed but each track really breathes a new life in a live environment! Miyavi’s guitar has a beautifully raw and dirtier edge to it’s sound tonight and with each strum the fans can’t get enough!
‘Cruel’ is a haunting opener that quickly erupts into a riff frenzy while Bobo slams the drums with intensity and passion. Miyavi takes time during his set to connect with his fans and discusses how music can unite all of us which is also a major theme throughout his set. ‘Calling’ has the crowd in the palm of Miyavi’s hand as everyone from the front to the back of Shepherds Bush Empire waves their arms or is jumping around to the beat.
There’s an electric atmosphere in the venue tonight which passes from Miyavi to the crowd and vice-versa which seems to fuel Miyavi’s super charged stage presence. The on stage chemistry between Miyavi & Bobo is a constant battle of riffs vs drums as Miyavi teases Bobo to come at him with everything he’s got, and Bobo more than delivers! I’m not sure how that drum kit will last the full European tour!
Miyavi announces to the audience that it’s Bobo’s birthday today and with a huge cheer, the crowd all sing Happy Birthday; which I’m sure will be a personal highlight! The 90 minute set which comprised of an encore featuring Miyavi’s recent re-working of the Mission Impossible theme really allowed his guitar skills to speak for itself. Coated in a crimson haze, Miyavi pounds his guitar and has stamped his mark on the M:I theme, which was a treat to hear live!
