A little over a year ago, the UK welcomed MUTANT MONSTER and I had the pleasure of taking the trio on a tour around Camden Market (and also losing them in the local Dr. Martens store for a good 45mins!) It’s safe to say nobody wanted that tour to end, including MM, so when Hyper Japan Christmas’s first musical announcement was our beloved Punk trio, the fans couldn’t wait for November to roll around again!

I caught up with the band, post performance on the Saturday of the event to discover what MEANA’s worst Christmas present was, the bands future plans and more!

Q. How does the UK Punk scene influence the music you create as MUTANT MONSTER?

A. “When we were younger, we always listened to UK Punk music such as The Clash and The Sex Pistols. That’s in our roots with the fashion and sounds of UK Punk.”

Q. There are many female fronted bands breaking out of Japan right now. What are your thoughts on this?

A. “We want to be number 1, so we want to defeat them!” (laughs)

Q. Many of the fans from UK and Europe have travelled to see MUTANT MONSTER perform in Japan. How did it feel to see your fans from overseas at your gigs back home?

A.  BE: “So crazy, wow!!”

CHAD: “Crazy about Mutant Monster, so glad! Our music spreads worldwide! We call our fans ‘MM family’ and it’s a community created by fans that live in foreign countries!”

Q. What’s your favourite part of being in MUTANT MONSTER?

A. MEANA: “I love the anarchic style!”

Q. What was the worst Christmas present you’ve ever received??

A. MEANA: “A white and pink ‘celebrity’ style scarf!!”

Q. If you could travel back in time, which bands would you love to support on stage?

A.  “We were born in the wrong era! We’d love to support the The Clash, Ramones, The Damned, The Donnas & The Sex Pistols!!”

Q. What could you not go on tour without?

A.  MEANA: – points to CHAD and BE. (followed by a collective “aawww” from the press panel.)

CHAD: “fighting spirit!”

Q. What’s coming up next for MUTANT MONSTER?

A. “We cannot mention specifics at this time but it’s involving a long trip to a foreign country!”

Hmmm….very intriguing! I guess we’ll just have to wait and see how this develops in the future!

Thanks to MUTANT MONSTER & Hyper Japan Christmas for this opportunity.
