One of my favourite pastimes is discovering new music, especially now as Spotify is adding a number of Japanese artists / playlists on a frequent basis which is encouraging to see! On a routine evening where I’ve already exhausted a recently updated selection of tracks, I begin my weekly journey down the digital rabbit hole to see what treasures I can find!
While enjoying the Pop/Rock sounds of Sachie Hiraga & Homecomings, my eyes wonder down the right hand side of the artists profile where I find the ‘related artists’ feature. My eyes suddenly focus on a particular group by the name of CHAI. Now this isn’t the first time I’ve come across this group, thanks to a previous Spotify playlist, I have heard ‘Boyz Seco Men’ – garage rock guitars and drums with a wave of synth sounds, layered with Kyary Pamyu Pamyu-esque vocals creates something quite unique!
The groups first full album ‘Pink’ was released in 2017 and CHAI are due to release a fresh EP in May. CHAI describe their concept as “neo kawaii” which actually makes perfect sense when you hear their music! It’s fun, vibrant and definitely has an air of Brazil’s CSS about them. A refined ‘New Wave’ style that’s been given a fresh lick of paint and I’m loving every minute!
