Like me, you may have witnessed NO CARS live set for the first time, opening for THE TOMBOYS at the Zigfrid von Underbelly (Hoxton) in 2017. NO CARS are back but it’s only for a short time. ‘WELCOME TO YOKO’S HOT SPRING’ will be the bands last album as some of the band members are moving back to Japan.
NO CARS will be celebrating the release of ‘WELCOME TO YOKO’S HOT SPRING’ with a live gig on Friday 11th May at the Zigfrid von Underbelly and tickets are only £5! Before we wish the band all the best on their next musical adventures, NO CARS discuss performing at the Union Chapel, having a Raccoon in the band is no easy feat and how the bands ‘line check’ live opener always receives a mixed response from the audience.
Q. WHAT DID YOU DO DURING YOUR TIME OFF (POST APRIL 2017) AND DID THIS HELP THE CREATIVE PROCESS FOR YOUR NEW ALBUM?
A. Actually we recorded whole tunes a year ago! But I believe this one year made us younger (We all become 17 again) so the gig will be fun!
Q. WITH DIGITAL OUTLETS BEING THE KEY FORMAT TO HELP MAKING YOUR MUSIC MORE ACCESSIBLE FOR FANS, WAS IT AN EASY PROCESS TO GET YOUR MUSIC ONLINE?
A. At first long years, I thought our strongest point is our shows, not recorded music, so I used to write tunes for gigs. To be honest with you, I didn’t care much about digital outlets. This time I wrote tunes for my satisfaction. I used the more complex chords and rhythms. I’d love a lot of people to hear our music, so digital outlets are good!!
Q. IN THE SONG ‘SPRING’, YOU HAVE THE LYRICS “SPRING IS KILLING ME”. IF YOU COULD HAVE ONE SEASON ALL YEAR ROUND, WHAT WOULD YOU CHOOSE AND WHY?
A. I may still choose ‘Spring’ although it’s killing me. It’s ‘love and hate’ feeling towards Spring. I get very emotional. I had nice and bad memories. Things often happens in Spring. Spring makes my life more interesting. I think the atmosphere of Spring makes people crazy!
Q. WHICH IS YOUR FAVOURITE NO CARS TRACK TO PERFORM LIVE?
A. ‘Curry’. I love to let white English people dance and sing “Oh turmeric makes my fingers more yellow”.
Q. WITH SOME OF NO CARS MEMBERS RETURNING TO JAPAN, ARE YOU LOOKING TO FORM NEW BANDS OR PERFORM IN DIFFERENT GENRES?
A. Takaco is in a different band now. Candy is in a different band and also does his own music stuff. Tomoko is an actress so she is retired from music (I guess…. this time is a short comeback)
Haruna who went back to Japan (me) is.. I don’t know what she wants to do!
Q. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST MEMORABLE NO CARS PERFORMANCE?
A. Mmm… it’s a difficult question but playing at Union Chapel was surreal. Doing silly things at a sacred place is fun!
Q. WHAT’S IT LIKE HAVING A RACCOON (AKA CANDY TANAKA) IN THE BAND? HOW DO YOU KEEP HIM IN LINE AND WELL BEHAVED DURING PERFORMANCES?
A. Well behaved? Who said that? You can’t control animals. The raccoon like Candy is the most difficult animal to handle but everyone loves him!!!!!!
Q. YOUR ‘LINE CHECK’ OPENER IS A FUN WAY TO OPEN A GIG! ALTHOUGH I DID WONDER HOW MANY MEMBERS OF THE AUDIENCE BELIEVED IT WAS AN ACTUAL SONG?
A. Yes. People who see us for the first time always confuse that we are serious or we are just taking the piss. We don’t know the answer either! I think Japanese people are serious and people in England think so, too. I wanted to tell people “Not every Japanese” are so.
Q. WHAT WILL YOU MISS MOST ABOUT LONDON AFTER RETURNING TO JAPAN?
A. Ale! Ale! Ale! Nothing else! Ale! Ale! Ale! And falafel, quinoa.
